Dolomite Highlights

Time and again over the course of the year the Dolomites are the stage for numerous interesting and sometimes outstanding sporting events which are equally popular among tourists and locals alike.

Among the undisputed highlights of the winter season is the annual Alpine skiing World Cup race in Val Gardena in December. January sees what is probably the most traditional event on the local winter and cross-country scene: the Puster Valley Ski Marathon in Toblach, which welcomes ardent cross-country skiers to take part in the oldest open cross-country ski race in South Tyrol.

The same month offers a further top class event: the Biathlon World Cup in the Antholz Valley, when top international athletes compete over 10 days for medals and world championship titles. An exciting event that also features a fantastic surrounding programme of events in addition to the competition!

In February the annual Gsiesertal Run takes place in the Val Pusteria, one of the best-established cross-country events in Europe with impressive numbers of participants and athletes from 28 different countries. Almost at the same time participants in the Dobbiaco/Toblach-Cortina Cross-Country Race can be found in the starting blocks – a highlight not just for cross-country skiing fans.

At the beginning of June the 12th edition of the Cortina-Dobbiaco Run takes place, which has now become the largest running event in the Dolomite region.

In June the passes and roads around the Sellastock are closed to traffic on the Sella Ronda Bike Day enabling them to be conquered exclusively by cyclists.

In July mountain bike fans from all over the world meet for what is probably the hardest mountain bike race in the Dolomites, the Dolomiti Superbike, which leads participants through the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Alta Pusteria.
